G O O D A D V I C E What if you had the keys to a toolbox that could improve the logistical nightmare of searching for a job while PCSing? LinkedIn and the Defense Department have come up with such a toolbox. Spouses of active duty, Guard or Reserve service members can get a free one-year upgrade to LinkedIn Premium every time they PCS or within six months of leaving the military. The upgrade does much more than add a few new bells and whistles to your existing LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn and the Defense Department leveraged the personalized coaching of the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program (SECO) and the robust technology of LinkedIn to provide spouses with access to effective training and powerful tools. "It is a great example of how industry and government can work together to benefit our service members and their families," says Eddy Mentzer, associate director of Family Readiness and Well-Being in the Department of Defense's Office of Military Community and Family Policy. Take a look at what's available to you when you upgrade: Moving ? Hunting for a Job Just Got Easier Learn how to harness the power of a LinkedIn Premium upgrade. By Natalie Hayek, Air Force Spouse R AMP UP YOUR JOB SEARCH Pump high-performance gaso- line into the engine of your job hunt when you search with LinkedIn Premium's features. See how you measure up to other applicants according to seniority, education and skills. "To me, this is incredibly valuable," says Dan Savage, head of Military and Veter- ans Programs at LinkedIn. If you have a lot in com- mon with other applicants, you'll know that you're in a competitive position for the job. If other applicants are more qualified, you'll see where you need to strengthen your skill set. LinkedIn Premium also gives you direct access to employers and recruiters. You can contact them to introduce yourself and express your in- tent to apply. You can also see who views your profile. This is validating, Savage says, as you'll know that you've written your profile well and you're getting noticed. Take advantage of these insights early, and you'll increase the chances of sliding into a job soon after you PCS. SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS Your Premium membership gives you the keys to LinkedIn Learning, a library of over 12,000 courses. "That's one of the most powerful tools," Savage says. You can utilize this tool to fill in gaps on your résumé or hone skills to make yourself more marketable. Courses range from fundamental topics to com- plex concepts. Learn how to re-enter the workforce or bring your A-game to an interview. Or focus on sharp- ening particular skills. For example, photographers can learn about advanced editing technologies. Writers can de- velop their SEO skills. Follow a Learning Path, or a sequence of courses on the same topic. Savage and his team created a Learning Path for military spouses, called "Get Ahead as a Military Spouse." "We really wanted to find courses that would be specific to remote work and freelance opportunities," Savage says. The design promotes independence and sustaining employment. Completing a Learning Path earns you a "Badge." Post that Badge on your LinkedIn profile, and you'll stand out to potential em- ployers and recruiters. The extent to which LinkedIn Learning can serve you is so great, Savage says, that "it's kind of astonishing." 24 MILITARYSPOUSE.COM / SEPTEMBER 2018
