O U R L I V E S Semper Aloha! Stepping up to help left me wanting to do even more... By Stacy Bilodeau, 2018 Armed Forces Insurance Coast Guard Spouse of the Year® S o m e t im e s yo u ge t a li t t l e m o r e t h a n yo u ex p e c t w h e n yo u t a ke t h a t l e a p o f f a i t h a n d t r y s o m e t hing n e w. I was pushed outside of my com- fort zone when a fellow Coast Guard spouse friend let me know that the Joint Spouses' Conference (JSC) of Hawaii needed a volunteer to help promote the organization. After visiting their website and Facebook page, I knew I wanted to be a part of this amazing event for military spouses. What is JSC? It's a conference put on by military spouses for military spouses. It's a 100 percent non- profit/full volunteer force made up of spouses from all branches of services, all ranks coming together to put on an amazing conference. This year JSC is being co-hosted by Coast Guard and Marine Corps spouses, and they are combining the Coast Guard and Marine Corps mission of always being ready with the theme of #semperaloha. The idea for this conference started back in 1988 with Army spouses Judi Bramlett and Sharon Gilliam. Together, they started the Women's Conference for Army Wives at Schofield Barracks on Oahu. Years later, when she returned to Hawaii in 1995, Judi wanted to include all spouses and introduced the concept of a Joint Spouses' Conference. She presented this idea to Janel Howell, a Marine Corps spouse. This began the future JSC which is now held on Hickam Air Force Base. JSC has grown a lot. Last year, 500 spouses attended and it is growing more and more each year. >> Past workshops have included Intro to Henna Art, Advance DSLR Photography, Sweet Treat Design, Living Lei, Historic WWII Bike Tour, Car Buying, Space A Travel, Mil Spouses & Motorcycles, Career Catalyst, Get Sparked, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Military Families, Kayaking, Sculpt and Tone, and Self Defense. Spouses get to select from 30 courses. Photo by Vanessa Hicks Photography Mrs. Hollyanne Milley Spouse of Gen.
